Job Responsibilities and Duties

  • Identify client care requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual clients and other persons in a position to understand care requirements;
  • Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to clients, friends and families;
  • Carry out a comprehensive and accurate nursing assessment of the client;
  • Promote clients’ independence by establishing client care goals: teaching clients, and their family to understand their condition and transition to care, medications and self-care skills; answering queries;
  • Assure quality of care by adhering to good clinical practice; measuring health outcomes against client set goals and standards through tailor made care plans; making the right adjustments when necessary;
  • Resolve client issues and needs by utilising and communicating with the multidisciplinary team;
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations; calling for assistance from care assistants when necessary;
  • Protect clients and employees by adhering strictly to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled medications regulations;
  • Take clients’ parameters as needed and charts accordingly, recognising trends and alerting the nurse in charge or RMO if results are abnormal;
  • Provide direct client care which may be, but are not restricted to; bathing, toileting, mobilising, eating and drinking;
  • Maintain accurate and legally appropriate documents of nursing services by charting and filling in documentation in client file and residential home records;
  • Keep the IT system continually updated regarding client care and movement;
  • Maintain client confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential;
  • Maintains continuity between nursing shifts by communicating and documenting actions, irregularities/alerts and continuing needs;
  • Maintain a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building a rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods and attends staff meetings called at a planned or ad hoc basis;
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results and acting as the leader of the client’s care in order to attain them;
  • Report any complaints received from clients and assures them that their complaint has been noted whilst trying to amend and solve as a first point of contact. Reporting has to be done within designated timeframes;
  • Report through the correct reporting system of home any incidents which either he/she, the resident or the team working with him/her are involved in while on her/his shift;
  • Being a positive role model to other nurses and care assistants;
  • Provide direction and supervision to staff by overseeing the work done by care assistants, including the filling in of documentation and brings to their attention any shortcomings;
  • Assisting staff to identify individual learning needs and facilitating opportunities for staff development;
  • Providing training and development opportunities for staff to improve job skills and effectiveness;
  • Supervising work experience students on placement within the home and mentoring new nursing and care assistant;
  • Inducting new staff and temporary staff as required;
  • Ensures operation of medical equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions through the right channels, calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; attending talks re new equipment and techniques;
  • Maintains nursing consumables inventory by checking stock to determine levels; anticipating needed supplies; liaise with the Charge Nurse regarding ordering of consumables; using consumables and equipment as needed to accomplish results in most cost effective manner;
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational seminars, lectures both outside and in house;
  • Keeps abreast with latest clinical research and encourages others to do so;
  • Manages the ward in the absence of the charge nurse by continuing to give service provision and respond to any emergencies;
  • Complies with all health and safety policies, procedures and practice attending organised training regarding lifting and handling, fire hazards and fighting and basic life support.


  • Candidates must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing;
  • Candidates with previous working experience for at least 1 year in a similar environment will be given preference.

Personal Skills

  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians and hospital staff;
  • Basic computer skills;
  • Professional, friendly attitude;
  • Be patient and have a positive “can do” attitude;
  • Proficiency in English (both written and spoken).
