How Many of Us Are One Honest Conversation Away From Staying Somewhere We Actually Like?

Recruiter Alessandro Donnarumma shares insight into how unresolved workplace issues can influence an employee’s decision to leave, why open communication matters, and how one honest conversation can sometimes help turn frustration into a solution.

How Many of Us Are One Honest Conversation Away From Staying Somewhere We Actually Like?

Leaving a job is rarely about one simple reason.

Sometimes it is salary. Sometimes it is progression. Sometimes the role itself is no longer the right fit.

But sometimes, everything can feel right apart from one thing.

In a recent prescreen, Broadwing recruiter Alessandro Donnarumma spoke with a candidate who had left a job she genuinely enjoyed. She had grown into the role, developed confidence in her responsibilities and become proud of how much she had learned.

There was just one issue.

The office environment was making it difficult for her to focus.

She did not want to raise it because she was still relatively new and did not want to be seen as someone creating problems. So rather than have the conversation, she stayed quiet.

Eventually, she resigned.

Why We Sometimes Avoid Speaking Up

Many workplace issues begin small. A noisy environment. A difficult working dynamic. A process that causes frustration. A concern that feels too minor to raise.

On their own, these things may seem manageable. But when they remain unresolved, they can gradually affect motivation, concentration and overall job satisfaction. The difficulty is that speaking up can feel risky.

Employees may worry about being misunderstood, appearing difficult or damaging their relationship with a manager or team. For new employees in particular, there can be a temptation to simply adapt.
But staying silent does not always make the issue disappear. Sometimes, it gives the problem more room to grow.

One Conversation could Change the Outcome

During the discussion, Alessandro explained how he might have approached the situation differently.

Rather than framing the concern as a complaint, he would have started with what was working.

He liked the role. He was learning. He felt aligned with the organisation.

Then he would have explained the one thing making the experience difficult and asked whether there was a way to improve it.

The candidate paused before replying:

“I wish we had had this conversation three months ago.”

That response captures something important.

Sometimes, people do not leave because they dislike the company, the role or the team.

They leave because one unresolved issue becomes bigger than everything else.

Good Communication Supports Emploee Retention

Not every workplace issue can be fixed, and not every resignation should be prevented.

Sometimes leaving is still the right decision.

But open communication gives both sides the opportunity to understand the problem before that decision is made.

For employees, that means feeling able to raise concerns early and constructively.

For managers and employers, it means creating a workplace culture where employees feel comfortable speaking honestly without fearing that their concerns will immediately be seen as criticism.

That kind of communication can support stronger employee engagement, healthier workplace culture and better employee retention.

When employees feel heard, there is a greater chance that manageable problems can be addressed before they become reasons to leave.

Before you Walk Away, Ask Yourself One Question

Resigning can sometimes feel easier than starting an uncomfortable conversation.

A resignation letter is final. A conversation is uncertain.

But if you otherwise value your role, your colleagues and the organisation, it may be worth asking:

Could this be solved if I spoke about it first?

The conversation may not fix everything.

But it may give you clarity.

And sometimes, clarity is enough to show you whether it is time to leave or whether the situation was more fixable than it first appeared.

As Alessandro reflects:

“How many of us are one honest conversation away from staying somewhere we actually like?”

Sometimes, speaking up may be the difference between walking away and finding a way forward.
