Each year, seven different localities across Malta burst into life with lively festivities, as each village displays stunning decorations, hosts various activities, holds liturgical ceremonies, and organises processions, all complemented by an abundance of delicious food, staying true to Maltese traditions. 🍽️

Although the feast is celebrated universally, each locality adds its own unique touch, and lets just say, there’s a friendly rivalry among the seven communities! 😉

📢 𝐒𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲𝐬’ 𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 for 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 Proposed in Malta

Women experiencing a miscarriage within the first 22 weeks, along with their partner, will be entitled to seven consecutive days of paid leave. The government will cover the cost, offering each person the equivalent of the median wage — around €600.

📝 This miscarriage leave is separate from sick leave and will be in addition to existing entitlements.
💼 Applies to all employees in both public and private sectors, including part-time workers on a pro-rata basis, as well as self-employed and agency workers.

The government will also cover National Insurance contributions for both employer and employee during this leave.

🧠 Couples will have access to psychological support alongside the paid leave.
🗓️ Following four months of public consultation, proposals were approved by the cabinet and now move to the Employment and Industrial Relations Board for technical discussions before drafting a bill. No timeline has been given.

Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul said the measure recognises the pain of couples and will make Malta the first country in the world to fully fund miscarriage leave.

The seven-day leave is based on the World Health Organisation’s definition of miscarriage at 22 weeks. After 22 weeks, women will be eligible for maternity leave, currently only available from week 28. All pregnancy types are covered, including cases where termination is necessary to save a woman’s life.

📄 A medical certificate from a gynaecologist is required, which can be submitted by either partner. Details of the miscarriage do not need to be included. Couples remain eligible for leave even if they haven’t informed their employer about the pregnancy.

The government will also soon propose bereavement leave for parents who lose a child at a young age.
